Little Something On Tufted Puffins Posted: 25 Jan 2013 10:00 AM PST Tufted puffins (Lunda cirrhata) are aborigines of the North Pacific, including the Far Eastern seas of Russia, and some waters of the Arctic Ocean. These sea birds, puffins, migrate most of their lives in the open ocean. However, for the breeding season they return to their native shores each spring for four months. On the maps of Kamchatka and Sakhalin region there are a number of islands and coastal cliffs named in honor of puffins. And the traditional place of their breeding, the Commander Archipelago, where there is one of the largest and most ancient sites of these birds, of course, is called the island of Tufted puffins. Every year, flock of more than 100 thousand birds come here, given that the area of ââthe piece of land does not exceed half a square kilometer.
Puffins begin to equip their nests in May. Most of the birds make wholes in the peat layer for laying the eggs: they are digging wholes with their beaks, using them as a pick and shovel the ground with their claws.
A gull takes away the legitimate prey from puffins.
Since the fishing spots are far removed from the land, puffins bring a whole "bunch" of fish, clamped in their beaks, to their chicks. Reliably established record catch is 29 fishes at a time!
With strong long surf around the island there is a wide strip of sea foam, filled with green algae that birds feed on .
